Our short sleeved Martha blouse now comes to you in viscose, adding to it's vintage-ness.
This warm Latte colour suits many skin tones and is a great base for lots of stylish outfits. It is a quiet addition that you will reach for time and again because it lets other separates do the talking, just like a really good friend. Add a brooch or a necklace if you feel you need a pop of colour.
Viscose (or Rayon, as the American's call it) is made from wood pulp and is more drapey than cotton and breathes better than polyester. They marketed it as "artificial silk", especially in the war years when supplies of real silk was needed for the manufacturing of parachutes.
We've named the Martha blouse after Shona's great grandmother, a real adventurer, who followed her children out to New Zealand after her husband retired. Now that is some trip to make later in life. We think the Martha set is all about adventuring, even if it is a bit more urban than a pilgrimage on a sailing ship - just look at the pockets on the jerkin!
This style of blouse, with the strong pointed collar and darted shoulders shows up in sewing patterns from 1941 - 1946. The collar itself lived on a little longer, still appearing at the start of the New Look era.
Vintage credentials and other points to note:
Inspired from a vintage pattern (we have modernised the fit and the construction but not the style)
Classic curved and pointed 40s collar
Small darts sewn into the top of the sleeve
Suitable for war-time renactors
Pearl effect matching buttons
Fabric and components all purchased in the UK
Manufactured in the UK
Your blouse will need ironing after washing, but it irons very easily. If it has been folded in a case then creases do drop out if you leave it to hang for a while
